“Dad. Dad. Dad!” Laura's voice brought Alex back to the present. “What's wrong with you? I've said your name like seven times, but you're just sitting there in a daze.”
“Oh, sorry. What's up?”
“I need the keys to your car and some money. I'm going out with friends.”
“What friends?”
“I'm in a rush right now so I'll tell you later. Where's your wallet?” Laura snapped her fingers waiting for her father to respond.
Alex scowled. “Hey, don't snap your fingers at me. It's over on the kitchen counter.”
“Good,” said Laura, as she withdrew $100 along with one of his credit cards.
“I hope this one works,” Laura muttered to herself as she put the card in her purse. “Thanks, Dad! Don't worry about me for dinner, and don't wait up,” she exclaimed as she bounded out the door toward the garage.
“Hey wait,” Alex said as he opened the door to the garage. “No later than midnight.”
“We'll see,” said Laura as she slammed the door.
“Hey, drive safe and be careful with my car!” Alex shouted, but Laura was already gone.
He stood there for a moment, feeling frustrated and discouraged. Laura had seemed so interested in and supportive of the debt snake—why couldn't Alex get through to her now? Her interest had gone cold as soon it began to impact her life. Once Alex clamped down on expenditures, Laura had begun to rebel. She wasn't going to change her life because her dad had suddenly decided to instigate some new program. She was still staying up way too late, missing school, and spending freely. What concerned Alex most is that while she talked a big game about going to college in New York, Laura had yet to pick up a book to study for the SAT or any one of her advanced courses. All she seemed to care about or have time for was going out with her friends.
How do you inspire someone to change? Alex shook his head at the irony of it all. His wife had been trying to get Alex to change for most of their married life with little or no success. Now Alex was attempting the same thing with his daughter, to no avail. He thought Victoria might have a thing or two to say about that. He decided to give her a call.
